From the Italian word Tenebroso, meaning "murky". Like Chiaroscuro, is also concerned with the treatment of light and dark or shadow in a two-dimensional painting or drawing.
Initially the two might be confused. However there is a clear theoritical difference between the two. Chiaroscuro is used to give a 2-D object the sense of vlolume while tenebrism is used to provide a dramatic effect by having some areas very dark or black and others strongly illuminated. It is sometimes called "Dramatic Illusion" |

The picture shows two groups of militia, one group is coming on duty and the second is going off, the officers in the group coming on are shown in light, and is the young woman staring at them, the obvious focus in this picture. The faces of the various men are also illuminated showing their emotions in this instance in time. The light and shadow give the picture more drama rather than a 3-D effect.
