Exercice: Organic Pattern

Organic Pattern

The goal was to create a organic pattern composed of negative and positive images of the same picture. The final picture was created on an 11x14 inch poster board. To complete this project I followed the following steps:

  1. I started with some maple and oak leaves and arranged them so that they formed a rough square.
  2. Next, copied the arrangement. The goal was to draw the negative space, however, in this exercise I found that difficult, especially since the objects were known and recognizable, so I drew them as I saw them
  3. Next I created a 2inch x 2inch view finder and selected a view that I felt was interesting.
  4. I then made a second drawing from the view finder
  5. With the resulting 2x2 picture and filled in the negative space with black.
  6. I took this 2x2 image, scanned it and then used Photoshop to create a negative image, and then a 3x3 pattern to work from, I also made different sizes 1x1 inch images and 0.5x0.5 inch images.
  7. Then I printed several pages of each paterned page, and cut them up into individual squares.
  8. The last step was to glue the squares onto the 11x14 inch poster board to create the desired organic pattern

The final product

The pattern is two layers of the images, one the bottom layer I started with the generated 3x3 image and skewed things and by the opposite diagonal corner had returned to an organized pattern, the top layer uses the 1x1 inch and 0.5x0.5 inch squares and follows a similar theme on the opposing diagonal, moving from organized to unorganized and back to organized.

Since I had some more time, I decided to make a second picture. This one was an attempt at some optic art
