Negative Space

For the most part in your day to day life you are looking at the positive space: people, furniture, buildings, cars, etc. The objects you see all around you. The negative space is defined by edges of the positive space, or everything around or outside of whatever you are looking at.

Our class included this handout: Positive and Negative Space

Ellie brought in a collection of tripods and easles and arranged them in the center of the class.

The exercise for the class was to construct a viewfinder, a small piece of paper with a square/rectangle cut out. Then framing a portion of the tripod arrangement, draw and paint the negative space with black india ink.

In addition to the class exercise, since I am in the certificate program, I did an additional picture at home during the ensuing week. I arranged a chair, table and ceramic vase, and then drew and painted the negative space.
