Printmaking: Intaglio: Drypoint on Lexan

We did a drypoint engraving on copper in class, but I wanted to do some experimentation, and since I do not have easy access to copper, I started looking for other materials. So online research led me to plexiglass and lexan. I have worked with plexiglass and lexan and always preferred lexan. So I bought several 8x10 inch pieces. The nice thing about lexan is its clear, so its exceedingly easy to trace an image. So for my experiment I chose old group photo from my college days and the painting Starry Night.

Last night during my printmaking class I inked each one up and and attempted to print. The college picture came out a little light, so increased the pressure a little and printed the Starry Night picture, which came out better. Next week I'll duplicate the pressure and reprint college days picture.

I think the balance is still a little off, especially in the painted version, and I think I need to add a little more weight in the upper left.

Also, these images are mirror images of the original. I forgot to flip the photo I copied from.

Here are two more lexan dry point prints. In one I hand painted the dress in Naphthol Red (Water Color). In the original picture the woman is wearing a similarly colored red dress. I copied the image so the print is a mirror image of the original.

I tried a new drypoint and attempted to modify the an older etchings.

Sue - I don't think I have shown the previous printings. The shirt should be black. In previous printings the blur on the lexan worn down, so I needed to re-scratch that area of th picture. This shows the added background and re-scratched areas.
